NSF Smart Vehicle Concepts Center, The Ohio State University


The mission of the Smart Vehicle Concepts Center (SVC) is as follows: (1) Conduct basic and applied research on the characterization of smart materials, and the development of adaptive sensors, actuators and devices (based on active materials and control methods) for application to vehicle sub-systems and components; (2) Build an unmatched base of research, engineering education, and technology transfer with emphasis on improved vehicle performance; and (3) Develop well-trained engineers and researchers (at the MS and PhD levels) with both experimental and theoretical viewpoints. Summer 2016 Project Review and IAB Meeting

The Smart Vehicle Concept Center held its 9th Annual Summer Meeting 9-10 August 2016 at The Ohio State University.  The meeting opened with a poster session and lunch before a formal welcome and Prof. Singh’s presentation on the State of the Center.  The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department’s new Chair Vish Subramaniam gave an overview on the mission with a focus on education.  Then the Industrial Advisory Board Chair Tom Greetham of Moog Inc. gave a brief overview of the upcoming Board meetings and the “Outstanding Student Presentation” Award was given to Luke Fredette.  Prof. Singh gave a presentation describing the Undergraduate RIYA Awards ( and SVC Project Work in 2016.  Finally, Prof. Dapino presented an update on “Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing.”


The Industrial Advisory Board convened twice during this meeting: once after the open session on Day 1 and once after the technical presentations on Day 2.  The workshop focused on Phase III proposal preparation during the first meeting.  It was well attended by many IAB members and SVC project leaders; the NSF program director also joined by Webex meeting and provided the NSF’s perspective.  The IAB held its executive meeting on Day 1 as well and offered numerous suggestions regarding future review meetings.  The second Board meeting (on Day 2) mainly consisted of the LIFE project reviews and a discussion of future SVC meeting plans and what to expect from student presentations.


Outstanding Student Presentation Award

The outstanding student presentation award certificate was presented to  Srivatsava Krishnan by Mr. Thomas Greetham, SVC IAB Chair in August 2016 meeting.  Srivatsava is a graduate student pursuing a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering and advised by Prof. Vishnu Baba Sundaresan.  His research work in SVC project #46 focuses on the study of mechanoluminescent materials for applications as light sources, structural sensors, and health monitoring components.  His presentation in January 2016 meeting demonstrated the correlation between stress applied to a structure and its conversion into light in a mechanoluminescent composite via experimental investigations and validated mathematical models.

Luke Fredette was the recipient of the inaugural student award based on his talk of August 2015 entitled “Modeling and Characterization of Elastomeric Bushings”. He was formally recognized in March 2016.

Srivatsava Krishnan, with his experimental setup to characterize mechanoluminescent materials. The experimental setup shows the mechanoluminescent composite excited by a shaker, and lighting up with a blue-green hue, and is visible in daylight in the lab.


Prof. Vishnu Baba Sundaresan (Distinguished Undergraduate Mentor Award)

Vishnu Baba Sundaresan, PhD, was honored with a Distinguished Undergraduate Mentor award for 2015-16 academic year in the 21st Annual Richard J. and Martha D. Denman Undergraduate Research Forum on March 30, 2016.  The awards are designed to recognize and honor individual faculty members who have performed exceptional service as research mentors for undergraduate students.  He has directed the thesis of four undergraduate honors students in the 2015-16 academic year and one of the undergraduate thesis, by Hugo van der Walt, was closely aligned with the goals of SVC Project#46.  He currently directs research work of eight doctoral students and one postdoctoral researcher in mechanical engineering, and ongoing projects in Sundaresan’s group focuses on the study of multi-physics of ionic active materials with applications in additive manufacturing, energy storage, structural composites, and bioelectricity.  Sundaresan received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 2007 under the guidance of Professor Donald J Leo, served as a research scientist in the Center for Intelligent Material Systems and Structures (CIMSS) at Virginia Tech, and as assistant professor in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University before moving to The Ohio State University in 2012.


New Department Chair (Prof. Vish Subramaniam) Drives Enthusiastic Vision for Success

Professor Vish Subramaniam was appointed chair of The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at The Ohio State University, effective June 20, 2016.  In a news release, Dean David B. Williams of the College of Engineering said, “Vish has articulated a compelling vision for the college’s largest department and has done so with energy and enthusiasm…his multi-faceted prowess and stellar reputation as a collaborator will serve Ohio State Engineering superbly.” Read more here:



Improving Robotics Safety: Professors Su, Dapino and Wang Win Prestigious NSF National Robotics Initiative (NRI) Award

Associate Professor Haijun Su is the principal investigator for a National Science Foundation (NSF), National Robotics Initiative (NRI) Award, “Shape Morphing Arm Robotic (SMART) Manipulators for Simultaneous Safe Human-Robot Interaction and High Performance in Manufacturing,” sponsored by The Ohio State University Office of Sponsored Programs.  The prestigious award is the only NRI award given to Ohio State and one of just three awards presented in the State of Ohio.  Co-principal investigators are Professors Marcelo Dapino and Junmin Wang. Proposed Shape Morphing Arm Robotic (SMART) manipulators are designed to be inherently safe. Their arms are made of smart material composite beams highly compliant at high speeds for maximum safety and stiff at low speeds for maximum control performance.


Prof. Singh Honored with 2016 Distinguished Control Engineer Award

Rajendra Singh, faculty emeritus, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Ohio State University, was honored with the Distinguished Noise Control Engineer Award on June 15 at the Noise-Con 2016 Conference in Providence, Rhode Island.  This conference is presented by INCE/USA, a member society of the International Institute of Noise Control Engineering, a consortium of organizations with interests in acoustics and noise control.  More information is here:
